It offered unity, security and solidarity to the needy people of western europe. It helped people question their existence, explained evil in the world , including death an illness: told them who and what they were an why they face hardship. The authority of the bible: old testament (talmud)1400 400 bce + new testament (christian scriptures) 50 150 ce. The imperfect, fallible human mind could misunderstand it. To correct for any misunderstanding , god established the church as his representative on earth . as the bi(cid:271)le(cid:859)s i(cid:374)falli(cid:271)le i(cid:374)te(cid:396)p(cid:396)ete(cid:396), the chu(cid:396)(cid:272)h e(cid:454)isted to (cid:373)ake (cid:396)e(cid:448)elatio(cid:374) (cid:396)atio(cid:374)al. It also functioned to spread biblical truth, which included suppressing other different opinions about the world: so the church strove to avoid division at all costs and safeguard the precious truths revealed in scriptures.
