Bioethics lecture 2 bioethics origins and history. He says the bioethics has to deal with the ecosystem and we as humans are art of the ecosystem as animals and other beings. 1960s: bioethics has been institutionalised through some research institutions (d well, p. 19). Two important american institutions: (1) the institute for society, ethics and the life sciences founded in 1969 (hastings center now) (2) the kennedy institute of ethics (1971) 1971: the notion of bioethics appeared in the name of the kennedy institute as biomedical ethics. 1971: but some scholars do think that the word was first used (1970 ?) by the american oncologist van rennselaer. Potter (1911-2001) in his book entitled bioethics-bridge for the future. Others think that is fletcher the first one to use the term in his book entitled morals and medicine published in 1954 (kuhse & singer, p. 7) Bioethics before van ressselaer potter: medical and nursing ethics medical and nursing ethics.
