Ontically closest and ontologically furthest from himself (???) Heidegger showing us that it"s actually not simple at all (1) has to do with the character of our own everyday understanding of our being (2) has to do with the historical nature of our understanding. Dasein is ontically closest to us because we are ontical dasein is the closest entity to us because we are dasein. Understanding we have of our everyday existence is a distorted understanding. Absorbed in activities, losing ourselves in the things we find around us. Dasein has a natural tendency to understand itself as being like the things that surround it: we have a natural tendency to interpret ourselves as things, just like the things we are constantly pre-occupied with.
