Different approaches to glbn: includes enlargement of world communications. Glbn: a contested concept: glbn = active process, dynamic & unpredictable, structure = static. Ideology of glbn: what are ideologies, starts with a problem in society = identify problem. Ideology of glbn = don"t fight it b/c: It is unstoppable (tina thatcher said it was natural like the weather) Elements of glbn ideology: advance corporate agenda, fiscal deregulation, balancing the budget, cutting back entitlements (non-corporate) In deregulated global market, govts need to be protected: glbn promotes comparative advantage & division of labour, belief that govts cannot halt glbn. Internationalism, solidarity b/n countries vs. protectionism & natonalism: aura of virtue b/c its meant to help developing countries. Pro: world economy = interdependent, shrinking regional culture, emergence of global culture. Ex. on environment, global justice: openness & deregulation mask for newest phase of capitalism. Economic perspective = internationalization of production, division of labour, migratory mvmts from south to north.
