John locke is the father of liberal thought: progress in history. The citizens have the right to determine their own destiny and have a say in who governs them. These thoughts went on to affect the american revolution. The idea that there is progress in history (we have better developed moral ideas, better developed technology), things are fundamentally changing. Realists argue that we have no progressed: the same interests dominate (lust for wealth, domination) the real fundamental roots of ir do not change: rationality, reason, and science. Realists believe that as rationality develops, ir will become more progressive: individualism. Human rights: because we were born as human beings, we have certain rights that no one can take away from us. Celebration of the individual (reflected in the idea of democracy) Individuals and individual choice and individual behaviour plays a role in how international relations works: important & possibility of cooperation.
