Each of these questions can be interpreted in different ways. Theories of war deal with al three of these questions. Led to much confusion in literature because each of them interpreted these questions in different ways: what conditions must be present for there to be war at all/ Full sequence of events leading to outbreak of particular war. Presupposes human tendency to live in separate communities. Understand themselves to be fighting on behalf of one society vs another. Only species with social self-understanding and capacity for organized inter group killings. Even though there are some degree of conflict between animals, it is only humans that have the capacity to understand that they are fighting on behalf of society as a whole.
