Perspectives on states and societies 4 perspectives: states supremacy: independent and dominant society, inherent problems of the state, state are the products of society, make choice, what kind of governments they want. Societies give them power, and place demands on them: states dependency: treats states entirely dependent. States do have a degree of independence: interdependency: more of reconcile role, does recognize that there are obligations of the state, separation of autonomy: separate sphere of public and private life. Modern form of authoritarianism traced to napoleon. 1945-1989 cold war, wwii spread of communism in parts of asia etc (high water mark) Right wing authoritarian regimes out number the left. Looking at rulers maintaining their power and privilege. Limited to activities which support authoritarian regimes. It"s a state, states need some base of support for their activities, cannot ignore their societies. If they do they will be doing so at their own parallel.
