Many varieties of developed democracies around the world. In the past (de nitions used in the cold war era) . Rst world = countries aligned with the united states. Second world = countries aligned with the ussr. Developed democracies all share some basic characteristics. Common belief in participation, competition and liberty. There are differences in how individual countries address these issues. Developed democracies all adhere to general tenants of capitalism. Type of economic output is the same (mostly service, as in government workers, jobs that do not produce anything but deliver services to the public) Uses gdp per capita as a measurement. Debates about state role in the economy. There are various paths of democratization and industrialization. Usa and canada: early democratization and industrialization. Is dif cult to prove because of intervening variables. Developed democracies have different electoral systems and stress the importance of things differently. Who voters vote for (a direct person vs party, etc)
