What transformed Abo society was disease and European technologies.
French settlement occurred first then British settlement followed as the HBC in Rupert’s land in
1670.
From a French Colony to a British Colony
The boundaries between the French and British lands where poorly defined.
The treaty of Utrecht (1713) led to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia as British colonies.
The treaty of Paris brought New France to the British and the Acadians were expelled from
Nova Scotia.
Consolidating British Rule in British North America: The Royal Proclamation of 1763.
This is the first document of law that establishes BNA
Establishes a basis of government administration in the North American territories formally
ceded by France to Britain in the Treaty of Paris, 1763, following the Seven Years War.
It established the constitutional framework for the negotiation of treaties with the Aboriginal
inhabitants of large sections of Canada,
New France became Quebec and this law protected the French speaking Catholics.
This also put forth that land west of Appalachian Mountains can only be settled with permission
with the crown because the crown must negotiate with the abos for the land. And that it
recognized aboriginals as people entitled to their land.
Only the crown can get land west of the mountains through treaties.
Creating government: The Quebec Act of 1774
Quebec act first to establish a colonial government
A council was appointed to advise the governor of Quebec.
The Quebec act emancipated the New French and gave them civil law, restored catholic church
rights and expanded the Quebec frontier to close off American expansion west
