POL 2107 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Foodborne Illness, Antisthenes
Document Summary
Founder of the cynicism (cynicism as its extreme) Cysnics are referred to as dogs, diogenes was proud of this fact (cunicos) Hagel: the cynics fully deserve the name of dogs since the dog is a shameless animal. He was not born in athens: his father was a coin maker. He was ostracised (kicked out) because they defaced the coins and cheaped them to people. He went to athens and attached himself to a teacher of philosophy because he really loved philosophy and wanted to do that: his teacher being antisthenes. Diogenes is in athens and he is very poor, he decides to visit the temple to ask what he should do with his life: the answer he is given: deface the (political) currency. In these words diogenes saw a mission, he saw that he should deface and alter customs and traditions, and laws. Cynicism: they have to take care of their bodies and selves.
