Aim to get a holistic understanding of how individuals in different cultures and subcultures make sense of their lived reality. Over long period of time, observational will take a couple of years. Consideration how long is your degree put in perspective ur question u wish to look into. Research topic, political studies employ ethnography, diagrams, power notes, journal entries. Think about anthropology, figure out the community walk around observing the land what event take places, what challenges watch community committee. The research question dictates the type of methods you use. If your research question requires an in depth understanding of the social context, in particular the culture within which individuals engage in a particular set of behaviours, then ethnography is it appropriate. Questions ethnographers ask: how do individuals view their world, what is their story, how do members of a given culture understand a custom or behaviour. Not just interview how they existence how do they function over the year.
