Substance use disorder: continued substance craving and use despite signi cant life disruption and/pr physical risk. Psychoactive drug: a chemical substance that alters perceptions and moods. A drugs overall effect depends not only on its actual biological effect but also the users expectations (which vary with social and cultural contexts) Tolerance: the diminishing effect with regular use of the same dose of a drug. It requires the user to take larger and larger doses before experiencing the drugs effect. Addiction: compulsive craving of drugs or certain behaviours (i. e. gambling) despite known adverse consequences. Many addicts actually do bene t from therapy or a support group. Withdrawal: the discomfort and distress that follow discontinuing an addictive drug or behaviour. The there major categories are: depressants, stimulants and hallucinogens. They all do their work in the brains synapses, stimulating, inhibiting or mimicking the activity of the brains own chemical messengers, the neurotransmitters.
