PSY 1101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 13: Frontal Lobe, Occipital Lobe, Parietal Lobe
Taken down in notes.
PSY1101 Divisions of the Brain
Midterm material is until the end of Neuroscience.
The Hypothalamus
•base of the brain:
(common centre for tumours)
•very rich supply of blood flowing through the region.
•monitors the blood supply: feeling of hunger (hypothalamus detects the absence of nutrients),
feeling of thirst
•Autonomic Nervous System: basic needs - eat, sleep (detects light), drink, breed, temperature
regulation (sweat to cool off), hormonal detection
•the Endocrine System
•control of endocrine glands is via pituitary gland
•the pituitary is controlled by the brain
•the hypothalamus monitors the level of hormones circulation in the blood
The Endocrine System
•hormones are released into the blood
•their action is thus general. This results in general, nonspecific drives and urges.
•slow and long-lasting actions
•neuron: direct in contact with contact. Communicates via neurotransmitters.
•the action of a near is rapid and can be specific or nonspecific
Basal Ganglia
(complex of subregions)
•receives input from motor cortex
•control of movement and posture
•direct intentional movement
Cerebrum
(Neocortex- 6 layers of grey matter : grey matter is outside, white matter is inside. *less complex the
animal, the less layers of matter there are*)
•complex interconnections
•sulci and gyri
•longitudinal, central, and lateral fissures
•Fissure: e.g.: the separation from the left and right sides of the brain.
•There are separations all along the brain = appear as ‘folds’.
Functional Neuroanatomy
•F. Gall - phrenology (felt scalp and find bumps on skull=active parts of the brain/overactivity)
•It was a kind of fortune telling but it was kind of accurate with which parts of the brain bring
happiness, etc.
•Brodmann’s Areas - a map of different sections of the brain. He was right, but didn’t find out the exact
functions. The cells looked different in different parts of the brain.
•current date: MRI & fMRI to map the brain
•(see: UK normative study) n = 100,000
