Document Summary
Operant: organism associates own actions with consequences, and is reinforced (negatively or positively). Operant conditioning and classical conditioning are both forms of associative learning. Associate a response (behavior) and its consequences. Learn to repeat behaviors followed by desirable results. Learn to avoid behaviors followed by undesirable results: the behavior is balancing a ball and the consequence is receiving food. The seal learns to associate balancing a ball on its nose with a food reward. If the organism is learning associations between its behavior and the resulting events, it is. If the organism is learning associations between events that it does not control, it is classical. Reinforcement is key to operant conditioning: a reinforcer increases the likelihood of a behavior being repeated. Note: negative rei(cid:374)for(cid:272)e(cid:373)e(cid:374)t is not pu(cid:374)ish(cid:373)e(cid:374)t : negative reinforcement. Removing an unpleasant stimulus after a response (-) (ice cream leads to kids not screaming for dad: positive reinforcement.
