Document Summary
Chapter 11 what drives us: hunger, sex, friendship, and. Motivation: a need or desire that energizes and directs behavior. Four perspectives for understanding motivated behaviors: instinct theory: genetically predisposed behaviors, drive-reduction theory: responses to inner pushes, arousal theory: finding the right level of stimulation, maslow"s hierarchy of needs: priority of some needs over others. Instincts and evolutionary psychology: darwin"s influence caused many people to classify many behaviors as instincts; instinct theorists were naming the behaviors but did not explain them, instinct: complex behaviour that is patterned throughout a species and is unlearned. The physiology of hunger: stomach contractions cause feelings of hunger, however people without stomachs still have feelings of hunger; what else regulates hunger, body chemistry and the brain. Humans automatically regulate caloric intake to prevent energy deficits and maintain stable body weight. Low levels of blood glucose cause your brain to trigger hunger. Hypothalamus secretes appetite stimulating (released by arcuate nucleus) or suppressing hormones.
