Most psychologists view human behavior as directed by physiological needs/wants. Genes predispose species-typical behavior remain as strong as ever. Drive-reducion theory = replaced insinct theory; idea that a physiological need creates an aroused tension state (a drive) that moivates and organism to saisfy the need. Homeostasis = physiological aim of drive reducion; maintain a constant internal state: ex. if out body temperature cools blood vessels constrict to conserve warmth, we feel driven to put on more clothes/seek warmer enviro. Incenives = posiive/negaive environmental simulus that moivates behavior: ex. Aroma of good food can moivate out behavior: ex. With both a need/incenive, we feel strongly driven: ex person who smells baked bread feels strong hunger drive.
