Document Summary

There are 3 processes involved with memory; complex mental processes that involve information processing. Retrieval: being able to get information out of storage. Memory of traumatic events stay in the nervous system and influence behaviours. Implicit memory: memory without consciousness, yet it continues to affect behaviours. Things we learn gradually which later become automatic. Recall: asking someone to remember something without giving them any retrieval cues. Recognition: asking someone to remember something, giving them many pieces of information (of which one is the correct answer) and having them identify the right answer. Relearning: timing how long it takes someone to study a subject on two separate occasions (if the second time is shorter, memory is involved) There are two ways by which we encode information. This corresponds to the dual processing abilities of the mind (the two-track mind) Ebbinghaus was the first to scientifically study memory.
