Document Summary
Peripheral nervous system: all neurons and nerves in the body that are outside of the cns. The function and structure: communication network, receive info from the environment, through eyes and ears, take info and analyze, organize and integrate it, send out instructions to the rest of the body. Basic building blocks of the nervous system. Basic structure of the neuron needs to function. Soma: cell body, the control center of the neuron, produces everything a neuron. Myelin sheath: white and fatty like substances covers some axons- not all, Terminal buttons: axon terminals, release neurotransmitters provides insulation and speeds up transmission of info. Synaptic cleft/gap: distance between two neurons at the synapse. When the neuron is at rest: inside = negatively charged ions while outside = Two kinds of messages: inhibitory messages (instruct neuron do not fire) Will change [ ] of ions inside will become even more negative.
