Document Summary
Memory is made up of 3 processes (not a single process): encoding, storage, retrieval. We make no conscious effort to memorize things (get information in) but it is encoded nonetheless: effortful processing. Putting time / effort into getting information and encoding it in: rehearsal. Used nonsense syllable to test effectiveness of memory. It is a good way to memorize material. The amount remembered depends on the time spent learning. For novel verbal information, effortful processing (practice) makes perfect. I. e. : you will remember people first in line because you are rehearsing it but you won"t remember people closer to you (near the end) as. Person in a group has diminished recall for the words of others who spoke immediately before or after this person. You are more likely to remember the first words and last words in a list than words in the middle.
