Document Summary

Chapter 11- motivation and work: motivational concepts. They are innate, unlearned, and automatic patterns that we are born with (ex: bears hibernating). They were used to describe all behaviour but they really only explain some. Drive theory: when basic biological needs are not met (ex: food, water, etc. tension is created which is aversive and uncomfortable. To resolve this, we get rid of it by finding the solution (ex: hungry eat). Incentives: stimuli in the external world that we are attracted to (ex: get a degree go to school, study, etc. ). Arousal: being alert and/or excited about something. We are motivated to maintain balanced levels of arousal. We do something to get out of arousal state (ex: bored call friend, do something). We have both psychological and physiological needs. This means that certain needs must be satisfied before others. Stomach: when the stomach is empty, we feel hungry. When the stomach is full we can still feel hungry and eat.
