Document Summary
Orexin: role in arousal, locomotion, expenditure of energy, higher craving for food. Apnea(mainly in older, obese adults sleeping in prone position): perhaps sudden infant death syndrome (sid) Consciousness can be studied as a process or a state. Assumed to occur prior to consciousness (awareness) We are conscious of only a small portion of this input. We become conscious of that which is relevant. To become conscious requires additional processing: attentional processing. Observer must choose to become aware of that which is relevant. The central executive (frontal lobe) determines features of what is relevant; stores these. Failure to choose results in information overload in working memory (top down processing) The features of all incoming stimuli (ex whether attended or ignored) are automatically extracted and compared to those that exist in working memory. Features match: further processing is warranted ( consciousness) Processing of that which is irrelevant is inhibited. Holding info in working memory requires effort (active attention)
