Document Summary
Consciousness as a state: sleep and wake states. Consciousness as a process: the process of becoming conscious, selective attention process. Ultradian: within 24 hours: like eating, more than once within 24 hours. In humans adults, sleep is a circadian rhythm: in infants, sleep seems to be an ultradian rhythm, meaning more than once a day (naps) The onset and offset of sleep is largely biological controlled by the detection of light-dark. Sends a relay to the pineal gland to release melatonin which makes you feel sleepy. Pineal gland; melatonin: melatonin release by the pineal gland (under the control of the suprachiasmatic nucleus, mainly released during the night (in the absence of light, light inhibits the release of melatonin, administration of melatonin.
