Chapter 5: developing through the lifespan (prenatal to childhood) Developmental psychology: scientific study of human development through the entire life span. Includes changes from conception to death, and contains positive growth and decay. Researchers in the field study how we develop physically, emotionally, mentally, and morally. Nature vs nurture as it"s applied to development. Development in stages (major changes with plateaus in between) or continuous (slow gradual development) Critical periods (window of time brain must be exposed to specific experiences to develop) Called an embryo; cell division continues, the: the fetal stage: week 9- end of pregnancy. Teratogens: anything that can harm the baby in the womb. Type of teratogens (different ones cause different birth defects) Dose (higher the dose the higher the probability of the birth defect) Time of exposure (how developed the baby is at the time of exposure) Genetic susceptibility (some babies/mothers are more genetically vulnerable to birth defects than others.
