Free association: a method of exploring the unconscious in which the person relaxes and says whatever comes to mind, no matter how trivial or embarrassing. Personality structure: freud believed that human personality (including its emotions and strivings) arises from a con ict between impulse and restraints. Id: a reservoir of unconscious psychic energy that, strives to satisfy basic sexual and aggressive drives, id operates on the pleasure principle, demanding immediate grati cation.
