Antianxiety drugs: depress central nervous system activity; used to control anxiety and agitation; i. e xanax, ativan: dangerous when combined with alcohol and other nervous system depressants. Effective when combined with psychological therapy to treat gad, ptsd, ocd, and phobias. Can be addictive, ppl who stop taking them after heavy use may experience withdrawal symptoms; danger of psychological and physical dependence. Antidepressant drugs: drugs used to treat depression, anxiety disorders, ocd, and ptsd by boosting mood by elevating levels of norepinephrine and serotonin; i. e prozac, zoloft, paxil. First generation block reabsorption or breakdown of both norepinephrine and serotonin. Side effects include dry mouth, weight gain, hypertension, dizziness, fatigue.
