I perspectives on psychological disorders: introduction. Abnormal psychology (psychopathology: study the cause and effects of mental illness, scientifically study how to treat and prevent mental illness. Prevalence: within a year, people experience mental illness, in a lifetime, people will experience mental illness, 60-70% of people who are mentally ill do not get help. Mss medical student syndrome: when med school students study diseases they associate minor symptoms they have with diseases. Same goes for psych students who study mental issues and start thinking they have them too: defining psych disorders. Criteria in order to determine if a behaviour is not normal: statistical infrequency the more infrequent behaviour within a population is the more likely it is that it"s abnormal. Deviant: behavious has to deviate from social norms or rules of a specific culture, problem is that some choose to deviate from norms of a specific culture, and all cultures have different norms.
