* read about motor development in the textbook: cognitive development. Cognition: complex mental processes i. e. thinking, reasoning, planning, memory, languages, etc. Ironically was a biologist and not a psychologist. Had children, became fascinated with child rationality and thought. Spent 50 years studying children and creating monumental development. It was initially believed that a child"s mind worked like an adults except they had less information. Piaget rejected this belief and theorized that their minds were different than that of an adults. According to piaget, children are active learners who always want to learn more. Assimilation: information is integrated into existing schemes, using existing ways of thinking to understand. Accommodation: changing the schema to accommodate new information, changing our old ways of thinking. Four stages of development according to piaget: Are universal: sensorimotor stage (0-2 years of age) Children use senses and motor activities to understand the world.
