Child must feel safe and secure to explore their environment. Attachment to your caregiver affects your attachment with friends, lovers, etc. 6-12 months is when attachment to the care giver develops and it affects you well into your life: before and after separation from parent when a stranger is interacting with a child. Secure: exploration, seeks comfort from caregiver, caregiver provides comfort. Avoidant: does not demonstrate distress, limited proximity seeking, caregiver rejection, does not show distress because they are used to being rejected by caregiver. Ambivalent: exaggerates distress, does not calm down, caregiver inconsistent, intrusive.
