PSY 2106 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Statistical Hypothesis Testing, Sampling Error, Sampling Distribution
Document Summary
Review of questions i"ve answered with z -scores. Measure on scaled with different means & sd. We"ve used z - scored to place a raw score relative to other members of that distribution, and to place a sample relative to other samples in that distribution. But we want of do more than just describe one individual or sample - we want to make inferences about our population based on our sample. In hypothesis testing, we use sample data to determine if the sample is likely to belong to population that has particular characteristics. In hypothesis testing, we use probabilities to make decisions concerning values of population parameters. The probabilities are based on data from our sample. In the process of hypothesis testing, we need to understand the sources of variation in our data so that we can isolate the variance that is due to our independent variable. Chance variation: chance variation of results due to no particular factor (noise)
