PSY 2110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Impression Formation, Cognitive Load, John Pendry
Document Summary
We form impressions quickly and on the basis of little information. Processing information about people involves perceiving some coherent meaning in that person. the process by which people come to understand others. We organize by categorizing or grouping stimuli -> schemas. Our needs and goals influence how we perceive others. The person who is perceiving the target/judging him or her/evaluating him or her. Assumption: most studies of person perception are designed as a one-way process for practical reasons (i. e. the observer perceives the target), but in reality the process is bidirectional. Defined as an initial inaccurate expectations that will lead to actions that cause and expectation to come true. Perceive someone to be shy and they won"t participate much therefore you don"t involve them. As we have self-schemas, we also have schemas that help us interact with our environment. Describe personality of others - can be applied to specific ppl, can also be applied to types of personalities.
