Very little consensus around the de nitions and theories that are out there. General de nition physical and verbal behaviour that is intended to cause either physical and psychological pain to someone. Common features in a de nition (there is a general consensus around these elements) : presence of a behaviour by omission or negligence is not agression. Can"t measure an absence of a behaviour. More open ended since psychological harm isn"t objective and it can"t be seen. Distinction between them is based on the situation. Issue there is no theory that explains all of them. There is some general consensus around them though: direct face to face contact. Ex: punching someone in the face: indirect hurting people without any contact. Ex: spreading rumours or hiring a hitman: hostile/reactive/emotional acts of agression that stems from emotions. Ex: being provoked and then hitting someone or spreading rumours: instrumental means to some goal other than causing causing.
