Children learn accents and phrases that their friends use. Friends teach each other academic and social skills. Age 6, befriend anyone of the same sex and age who is willing to play with them. Some are neglected, not rejected; they are ignored but not shunned. Aggressive-rejected: disliked b/c they are antagonistic and confrontational. Withdrawn-rejected: disliked b/c they are timid and anxious. Bullying; repeated, systematic attacks intended to harm those who are unable or unlikely to defend themselves. 4 types bullying: physical (hitting, pinching, shoving, kicking, verbal ( teasing, taunting, name-calling, relational (destroying peer acceptance, cyber (bullying that uses cell phones, computers, other electronic devices) First 3 are common in primary school. Aggressive-rejected children are bully-victims (provocative victims)(someone who attacks others and who is attacked as well) Age 11, puberty, cross-sex bullying usually stops and sexual teasing becomes apparent. Age 11, bullying becomes a way to gain social status.
