Emotional regulations: the ability to control when and how emotions are expressed; age 2-6. Effortful control: controlling outbursts is not easy, in childhood or later; more difficult in pain, tired, hungry. Initiative: saying sth new, expanding an ability, beginning a project . Age 2-6: na parents encourage enthusiam, effort, pride, prevent guilt from becoming self-hatred. Initiative vs guilt: children undertake new skills and activities and feel guilty when they do not succeed at them. Age 4/ 5, neurological advances in prefrontal cortex, less likely to throw tantrums, pick fights . Intrinsic motivation: pursue a goal that comes from inside a person (eg. joy of reading a good book) Extrinsic motivation: pursue a goal that arises from the wish to have external rewards (outside of a person) Age 3 strong intrinsic motivation, advanced in early math and literacy. Imaginary friends: age 3-7, friends who exist only in a child"s imagination.
