Work, school, and sleep: biological changes - puberty. Primary sex characteristics: the production of eggs and sperm and the development of the sex organs. Both male and female organs increase in size and weight. Secondary sex characteristics: bodily changes of puberty not directly related to reproduction. Often similar for males and females, but to different extent (e. g. , bodily hair, pubic hair, facial hair, skin changes, breast development) Onset can vary, with first pubertal changes as early as 8 in girls, 9 or 10 in boys, and up to age 13 (developed countries: girls start 2 years before boys. Time from onset of puberty to maturity can vary from 1. 5 to 6 years. Order of events more consistent than onset and length of time of puberty. Menarche onset of menstruation: not ovulating in first few cycles. Spermarche first spontaneous ejaculation of sperm. Greater synchrony of pubertal events in identical vs fraternal twins. Mother"s age of menarche predicts daughter"s age of menarche.
