Drugs & behaviour ii the more you take a drug, the more you get used to it, the less impact it will have on behaviours over time this is related to the physical dependency. After a while you have sensitization at neuronal level, you modify the neurotransmitters and the synapse, and you have an increase in behaviour. You will want the drug, the craving increases sensitization has more to do with craving, while tolerance involves habituation. You need less or the same amount of the drug to get a craving in sensitization. You don"t need the drug to get the behaviour, sometimes the environmental cues will trigger the craving in the end. certain drugs create both tolerance and sensitization. Both these things are triggering different mechanisms in different parts of the brain. Sensitization occurs in the straitum and the basal ganglia. in addiction, you see tolerance and sensitization. In substance abusers, you might only see one of the two.
