PSY 2301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Prolactin, Boogie 2Nite, Morphine
Document Summary
When you smoke tobacco, people get a head rush and attention and focus on tasks, ach in the central nervous system has this effect for attention. This is a benefit of nicotine and smoking cigarettes. They are right on top of the dienceophalon (thalamus). They have an implication in alzheimers and memory. Dopaminergic system: well studied system, has 4 principle pathways (2 in the book), nigrostrial pathway - implicated in parkinson"s disorder. When the substantia nigra deteroirates it creates rigidity and shaking symptoms. Pathway goes to straitum (basal ganglia, composed of putamen, caudate nuclues and nucleus accumbens): second pathway is the ventral tegmentum starting point, axons synapse into the cortical region (frontal cortex). Important in executive functioning and implicated with schizophrenia. If the receptors aren"t working adequately and can"t bind dopamine, this is why they have disorganization behaviours, malfunctioning in this pathway: another pathway we have is the mesolimbic pathway.
