So back in the 50"s some research was done on mptp. All human and primate test subjects got mptp induced parkinson"s (damage to the substantia nigra sn). All the monkeys and 2 of 6 humans died shortly after injection with mptp. In the 80"s the chemical was rediscovered when a number of ppl injected it via a bad batch of heroin. The ppl making the heroin were trying to make mppp but cooked it too long and got a mix with mptp in it. Soon treatments with l-dopa were found effective but with side effects. Other treatments were researched such as taking maois (anti-depressants) prior to developing symptoms (but not necessarily prior to damage to the brain) so you could have a brain scan, see the onset of. Parkinson"s, and take an anti-depressant to avoid ever getting the symptoms. Research into small doses of mptp as is found in cigarettes, chewing gum, and pesticides oh sorry funding ran out.
