1. Religion 26.06.18
Religion helps individuals remain reality-orientated; help find this meaning for many:
When facing death we realize that we are unable to complete our goals and probably cannot control the
situation of our death
Humans can spend their whole lives looking for the meaning of their lives
Finding meaning in death is even more difficult
Society has institutionalized the importance of religion by creating such rituals as the funeral
Some experts believe that religion functions to relieve anxiety
Bring about a restoration to normalcy; others say it increases fear (bell, etc.)
Assumptions
Meanings of death are socially ascribed through socialization
Anxiety is reduced through social co-operation, meeting together
Institutions provide anxiety reduction via afterlife concept i.e soul can now rest in heaven
Afterlife – definition changes from religion to religion, one of man’s oldest beliefs and values and the nature of
reality; something happens after death involving a judgement
Hebrews – death is the curse of Adam and Eve; some Jew believe in the afterlife while others don't
Adam and eve were considered immortal and lived in the Garden of Eden (assumed to be Heaven) and
death was only introduced when Eve sinned and ate the apple from the tree
God doesn’t save them from death but rather saves Israel for history
Christianity – death is the beginning of afterlife; heaven, hell, limbo and purgatory
Theme of loss as typified through the funeral rites
Heaven is considered the presence of God, hell is the absence of God
purgatory is where someone goes before they have atoned for their sins where judgement occurs
limbo is where ppl go when they have atoned for their sins but have not been baptized
life, death, and resurrection is the foundation of religion; death is vanquished by Christ’s resurrection
dualism was concept from Greeks – existence of the body and soul; life determined fate of soul
