Certain culture put a lot of emphasis on a woman"s (ie wife"s) fidelity, and the man"s honour is tied to the woman"s fidelity. Swingers are an example of a phenomenon that has very little jealousy among partners. Differentiate between physical and emotional fidelity, and put more emphasis on emotional fidelity. Enjoy sexual jealousy because it is interpreted as arousing. These different culture reveal a correlation between fidelity and jealousy. Increased value placed on fidelity - increased jealousy. It is often a cause, but also the result of unhappy relationships (previti & amato, 2004) Has been found in all studied cultures. 14th c philosophers: viewed jealousy as a positive emotion, which showed devotion and passionate love. 17th c philosophers: believed that 2 force guide human actions. Passion: inferior, uncontrolled (jealousy falls under this category)
