In relationships, there are exchanges of resources. Attempts to explain all types of relationships. Has been compelling, but controversial because this theory claims that there are no di erences between relationships at the top of the pyramid and those at the bottom. Uses economic principles supply and demand: can be rephrased as what are you o ering. Giving another person some sort of reward comes at a cost for the giver: ex: if you like touch, then getting a hug is a bene t for you. When one gets lots of bene ts and another gives too much, this can lead to the end of the relationship. There are scales: concreteness how concrete the reward is. Ranges form very (gives you a present) to abstract (spends time with you : particularity who provides the reward. More particular more likely to accept it from few people. Less particular more likely to accept it from anyone.
