The light goes on before the animal gets food or water, the light on one side of the cage predicts water and on the other predicts food. Often times the animal will be attracted to the stimuli (the light) before they go to the actual food or water. When the light predicts water there beak is shut and when it predicts food, their beak is open. A potential problem with both of these models is that they generally predict that the conditioned.
