Adolescence 14-21(when the capacity of reason first developed) They and plato believed that education should wait till after the age of 7 when the brain is more developed, and ready to apply reason. Children were similar to animals, they were ruled mostly by animals, only when they reached adolescence could they make rational decisions and proper reasoning. Both animals and children are ruled by the impulsive pursuit of pleasure. It is only at roughly age 21 that reason establishes firm control over the impulses. Life cycle service, a period in the late teens early 20"s young people engage in domestic service, farm service and various kinds of appendicitis, that was the way people learned the adult role. You moved out of your family home and into the home of a master, occasionally a 7 year apprentice. Young women were less likely than young men to participate.
