An increasing stress on understanding the self as the executive function. The term self esteem was coined by william james in the late 19th century. Broad socialization: promoting the independent, individualistic self where self esteem and self re ection is valued highly. Narrow socialization: interdependent self, the needs and interest of others take precedence over self-esteem. Self esteem as a western construct and therefor only really studies from western cultures. Self-re ection in adolescence: enhanced cognitive capacity in adolescence means that adolescents change inter self-conceptions, self-esteem, and their emotional understanding. In addition, it further means that adolescents change their identities. Adolescents are increasingly trait focused, more abstract, and have personality characteristics which can be positive or negative. Developing a sense of self: self-concept develops from early childhood. Adolescent self-concept becomes increasingly more complex and differentiated. They become aware of the differences between how they see themselves and how others see them.
