Chapter 7 - community, culture, and the media. Poisons the experience for everyone who is playing. Injuries have been seen as getting worse now that the athletes single-mindedly pursue the win: it"s hoped that by following a well-researched plan, sport groups will produce athletes with life skills . What is culture: relatively stable system of norms, beliefs, values, attitudes, and behaviours that is shared by a group and transmitted across generations, cultures are only relatively stable. They do not change very quickly or easily, but they do change: cultures are not just a grab-bag of random customs, they are systems. Psychology and culture: differences between canadian and asian children, shyness and modesty valued among chinese children, japanese students more (cultural) rules for expressing emotions, caution interpreting cross-cultural studies, same meaning, tendency to conclude better than rather than different . Individualism and collectivism: two broad worldviews embodied in different cultures.
