Document Summary

Comprehensive high schools track by expected work role. Progressive education aims to promote democratic values: learning that all these systems work together and we work within the democracy, not authoritarian system. Many high schools enroll thousands of students. Smaller schools safer, more engaging and personal: less than 1000, not as many students per class, curriculum can be more focused, students and teachers work together more closely. Students in smaller schools participate more: feel more comfortable speaking up in class, less confusion and more responsibility to answer questions. 5-3-4: elementary, middle school, high school: numbers represents number of years spent in that institution. Middle school now more common than junior high. Goal is finding a way to motivate the students to learn: part of teacher"s job to motivate. Performance orientation: single out high achievers: reports, final grades, eqao, etc. (performance indicators, set up to reward those high achievers but yet still not discard the rest of them.
