Chapter 6 : auditory system ii perceptual aspects signals that emerge out of the cochlea are ultimately transformed in the brain to pr occupe experience of hearing. Loudness is the subjective perceptual quality of sound related most directly to pressure or intensity: we can also say this is out mental impression of its intensity. Loudness always refers to the magnitude of the perception created by the sound of a particular physical intesity. In this case sound itself cannot have a particular value of loudness only intensity (or pressure: but loudness also depends on frequcy of sound among other things. Frequency of sound the sound plays a role in the loudness: generally accepted that 20 to 20000hz characterizes the frequcy range of hearing among humans, using one ear or both can also have a factor in loudness perception. In the auditory domain: relating threshold sound detection levels in terms of frequency: this is the minimal audibility curve, terminal threshold.
