In the past 50 yrs, significant drop in canadian fertility reason. Lots of pressure to have kids and follow the social script. Myth of motherhood frames motherhood as an instinct that can fulfill a woman in a way no other experience can. If you"re not going to be a woman what"s the point. Another myth is to have diff sex kids. Structural functionalists focus on having children as a necessary function of families in perpetuating society. Developmental approach sees having children as a developmental task of most families - natural sequence of events with a partner. Conflict theorists suggest social pressure to have children reflects prevailing ideology - broader level, looks at society and power. How families with children have greater social advantages than those without. Systems theory looks at how decision to have children creates different subsystems that affect family dynamic - beaks into subsystems and looks into each interaction.
