What is a family: government regulations determine what a family is for services such as immigration, medical benefits, leave and penitentiary visits, common law spouses, single parents, same sex couples all considered families under various laws. Social definitions on family: church, school, hospital (who can visit at hospital eg. , nuclear family. A family consisting of a husband, a wife, and their children. Often called the (cid:498)standard north american family(cid:499); forms basis for what advocates call (cid:498)traditional family values(cid:499) Family of orientation: family that we are born into and raised in. Family of procreation: family formed through marriage or cohabitation: extended family; culturally defined. Personal definitions: definitions of family can be personal, sometimes close friends are considered family members.
