We are going into the first mass geriatric society. More people are living long enough to suffer diseases that were not present in past cohorts. You may not have a disease but you still have decreased functioning. In the next 30 years the elder population will double. People aren"t dying of infectious diseases and people are dying from chronic diseases like stroke, diabetes, etc. Our medical system is not set up to treat chronic diseases, but we can do procedures to treat infectious or immediate diseases. The repercussions of keeping people longer and longer. Diagnose/treat/cure doesn"t work for chronic diseases and loss of a function due to aging. Governments believe that the family should take care of the family but: caregiving is a long time where people are living longer in needy conditions, families are smaller and mores spread out. Individuals with 3+ daughters or daughters-in-law have a 50% chance of not being in a nursing home.
