Biological function of attachment choosing comfort over food: john bowlby: evolutionary perspective attachment is necessary. 4 phases of attachment: orienting to people: but not particular others, preference for specific others (1-6 mo. ): maybe fear of strangers: attachment (6 mo. 2 years): seeking out attachment figures: partnership: conceptualization/working model of other(s) even when other is not present. Bowlby: preattachment (birth to 6 weeks): built-in signals, such as crying and cooing, bring a newborn baby into close proximity with their caregiver. Babies recognize a caretaker"s smell and voice and are comforted by these things. When the caretaker picks up the baby or smiles at her, the beginnings of attachment are forming.
